Hey guys! I had my hair trimmed last week and I've had a lot of comments on how long it's grown recently, so I thought I'd write a blog post on the things I do to my hair and some tips and tricks to keeping your hair healthy, allowing it to grow longer.
Tips & Tricks When Growing Your Hair:
٭ Get regular trims. It's recommended to trim your hair every 6 weeks, especially if you're growing it long. I know I was reluctant to trim my hair as I was growing it, but just think you'll have long healthy hair instead of straggly, dead ends.
٭ Don't wash your hair too often. Your hair needs oils to keep hydrated and for your hair to grow healthily. Continually washing your hair strips it of these natural oils. If you're hesitant to do this, invest in some dry shampoo or buy a hair band to conceal 2nd day hair.
٭ Wash your hair with sulphate free shampoos. Sulphate free shampoos are more hydrating and milder than shampoos containing sulphates, something to consider if you have a sensitive scalp. My favourite is the Loreal EverStrong Shampoo, or for a cheaper alternative, Timotei's Pure Shampoo is great too!
٭ Avoid dyeing your hair. I'm sure most of you know dyeing your hair is one of the worst things your can do to it! My hairdresser told me your hair will never go back to it's original condition once it's dyed, so try not to start in the first place. If you're keen to try out some colours, restrict yourself to only dyeing the ends of your hair, as you can always cut them off.
٭ Avoid tight, high ponytails. Although fashionable, tight hair styles can really break the hairs at the crown of your head and can also tug your hair, causing hair loss and broken hair strands. I lived in low braids whilst growing my hair, you can switch it up by doing fishtail braids or creating a low, fashionable bun made out of a simple braid and some hair grips.
* Use fabric hair ties. Don't ever use an elastic band to tie up your hair, it'll ruin it! Try to buy fabric hair ties without the metal to avoid breakage. I use an old fashioned scrunchie when I'm around the house to keep my hair out of my face.
٭ Sleep with your hair in a loose braid. During the night, moving around creates friction between your hair and the pillow, causing breakage. Sleep in a loose braid to avoid this, and you'll wake up with nice waves too!
٭ Avoid using heat on your hair. I can't remember the last time I used heat on my hair, probably one of the main reasons my hair has grown so quickly this year. If this is a struggle for you, leave your hair to air dry for a while then use your hair dryer to limit the duration of heat damage to your hair, and don't forget heat protectant!
٭ Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel after washing. When your hair's wet, it's at its most prone to breakage. Avoid rubbing, as you are rubbing your fragile hair strands together, causing breakage! A tip I've found is to use an old t-shirt to wrap your hair up in after a shower instead of coarse towels.
٭ Avoid brushing your hair when it's wet. Using a hair brush can snag your hair when it's at its weakest state. I love using a tangle teaser on my hair, it gets knotty at times and I find this brushes out the knots without hurting and breaking my hair.
٭ Use a deep conditioner at least once a week. I leave Tresemme's Platinum Strength Masque on my hair for 5 minutes while i'm in the shower and it leaves my hair feeling so soft and manageable. To give your hair a real treat, put deep conditioner on dry hair, pop a shower cap on and leave it for a few hours, then wash off to reveal soft and silky locks!
٭ Eat a good balanced diet, and lots of water! Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as well as fluids to keep yourself hydrated. What you put inside your body is shown outside. So feed your body with good food and you'll get healthy hair as a result!
My Hair Cut:
I've had a full fringe for most of my life, I cut it myself in between hair appointments, but most salons will trim fringes free of charge. As for my lengths, I don't have any layers in my hair, it's all one length. But my hairdresser does feather my hair to frame my face as my hair can get really heavy when it's very long!
